I was sorting through some of the motor race programmes from the 20s and 30s that my Dad had kept and came across this entry list for two 50 mile races at Phoenix Park in Dublin in September 1932. In the three previous years there had been a two day International Grand Prix in the Park but it seems that for 1932 this small programme was all that could be organised.

It's mainly a local field with only a couple of entrants from "the mainland"! But interesting to see what was entered. There are three 847 c.c. Midgets, possibly the new J2s but perhaps M types? There's also an 847 c.c. Morris-McEvoy Special. And in the Senior Class an MG Mk I (presumably an 18/80) and two 1250 c.c. Magnas. One must assume these are F types, but why the 1250 c.c when the Wolseley Hornet is listed as 1271 c.c.? By all accounts Cecil Kimber tried to disguise the Magna's Wolseley engine origin by adding a fictitious one millimetre to the stroke of the engine, but that made it a notional 1286 c.c., not 1250 c.c.
And over the page there's a nice advertisement placed by MG referring to Eddie Hall's class win in the TT, held the previous month, and to Mr. J. G. C. Low's "epic performance" in an unsupercharged M.G. Midget!

It's likely Potterton was in an M Type. There is a nice photo on the Prewarminor site of A.H.Potterton racing at Phoenix Park in 1933. The caption is - " A.H.Potterton (MG Midget) cornering at Mountjoy having just passed Flt.Lt.L.A.Briggs in a J2 Midget. Potterton averaged 63.40 mph for the 75 miles" ( He won - I wonder how he got on in 1932) |

Ian,
As it happens, my Dad had noted the results on the lap scoring sheet and Potterton in fact won the race, with MacLachlan in the Riley second and Sullivan in the Morris-McEvoy Special third. |

I'm surprised that the side-valve Morris Minor McEvoy Special had a worse handicap than all the Midgets. |

Nice to see my namesake came second, even if it was in the wrong kind of car.
