A friend of mine attended the Brighwells auction a couple of days ago. A nice M type and a J2 were sold. Photo of the J2 below.Makes me feel a little better about my own investment! A lot of hard work ahead I would say. 950cc?

| In better condition than my J2 when I first got it. AND it would seem to have the correct engine still in situ ! |

And still they turn up! The Registration number is not shown in the 2012 printed Register so may be a "new" J2. I wonder how much the J2 sold for?
No doubt our Registrar Robin will have noted this posting.

Looks a pretty straightforward project for someone and at a very reasonable price. I know of another J2 in very poor condition and less complete which sold for considerably more recently.
As an aside I was invited to the International Historic Motoring Awards 2012 in London last night and listening to conversations on the values some of these guys are placing on vintage and classic cars I cant help but wonder whether the upper end of the market is a bubble waiting to burst. I guess these high values make our pre war MG's look cheap buys at present but how long for ??
This event is sponsored by Octane Magazine, not one I normally buy, but they gave a free one away and I see it is carrying a full page ad for K3001 - no price mentioned - wonder what is being asked for this ?

| I thought the photos of the car was terrible you couldn't see anything mechanical. What was under the bonnet? What was on the dash? Did it make £10200 plus commision? If the engine was there I'd say it was ok at that money. |

The issue of whether there is a bubble about to burst is an intriguing one, but it's perhaps easy to understand why the current values arise:
1. Real assets are currently valued more highly than cash;
2. Using a very rough and ready rule of thumb, namely that over time money halves in value every 10 years, a £220 PA in 1934 would have been 'worth' £28,160 in 2004 and may be 'worth' £56,320 in 2014 
(Now that's going it a bit, I said it's a rough and ready rule of thumb, but nevertheless the trend is there to be seen ....!)
And as they say, "past performance is not to be taken as a guide to future performance" - and how true that is - in almost any aspect of life you care to think of!

And regarding the J2, a pal of mine who lives in the area and knows Brightwells very well looked at the car and it's a fairly good example, and apparently it's all complete - apart from lacking cable brakes!
The price was £10,200 + 12.5% buyer's premium.

The maths is very interesting but the value of an original K3 defies gravity at £500k, plus!
I looked at the full page advert in the latest Octane magazine for K3001 - it is POA. I wonder what value the vendor places on the car.

Indeed this is a new car, based on the bulkhead plate and details given here, the engine number matches the chassis. Once we establish who the new owner is and can get a close up of the chassis stamp then I can add it to the register and issue a register number. Indeed, they continue to turn up.

That's awesome wasn't expecting that many.
As for the bubble bursting I don't think it will on the top end cars like k3 j4 c types and special factory cars with racing history. They very rarely come to the market. As for your j types p types and all the common mg's Etc I think the bubble will burst on them soon.
If you look at everyone on this forum and look how many cars each person owns I bet it will average 2/3 cars per person, when Somone dies there's 3 cars come to the market. There's not many people under the age of 55 who have mmm cars. So in 15, 20 years time people will pass away and I wonder who will buy all these cars. There's not that many young people coming into it. |

You are quite right Greg. The age of ownership will very likely be an important factor over the next few years. As one of our younger members perhaps you should champion the cause for more youthful ownership !

but, the youth that we need to continue the life of this register [and all the other car groups] won't be able to afford the cars until the bubble bursts! |
