Scottish Motor Traction was the Distributor for Scotland, who would sell to Main Agents. I think SMT undertook guarantee work on behalf of Abingdon, presumably because of the distances involved, and hence no guarantee correspondence is found in the Abingdon files.
So who was responsible for registering the vehicle, distributor, main agent or the buyer ? If Scottish Motor Traction did guarantee work for Abingdon, are there any SMT records hiding in a library somewhere ? Surely Abingdon would have been informed ?
The Distributor (SMTC) would act as the wholesaler and hold stocks of cars from the factory before distributing/selling them to the Main Agents when they required stock replenishment. The Main Agent would normally provide retail showroom and service facilities and make sales to retail customers. The Main Agent would be responsible normally for registering a new vehicle.
It's a good question as to where the guarantee papers went.
thank you for this snippet. The F0313 chassis file indeed had a letter about guarantee matters, Abingdon was declining to have anything to do with a body issue as the Stiles bodies were not their responsibility. This letter is the only proof in the file that the car was a Stiles and so serves a very useful purpose!
