Hello All, I am now testing the J2's newly rebuilt Marshall and have problems which are normal. To ID my SU would be helpful.

It is bronze bodied and 1 3/8" sized. The casting no. on the side of the body is " 3367 ". It has a flange and drillings to attach an air filter, which is unusual for an early SU.

The piston is ali and takes a needle with a large shank ( about 4mm rather than the normal 1/8" ). Currently fitted with an 01 needle and 0.125" jet. Barry F has advised starting with an RLB needle and 0.09 jet . Are RLB needles available in "large shank" size ? Any ideas as to the SU's original application ?

Regards
Rod Green.

Have you tried contacting SU direct, online?
They claim to restore "anything" so must be a good place to start plugging away.
(As George and Peter state, SU "is" Burlen.
The website gives a wealth of information, that, if you cannot find it, they can assist.)
The carb on its own looks impressive. Let alone the car.

Hi Rod.
It looks looked you have completed a very thorough restoration.
The people to contact here in the Uk are Burlen Services in Newbury. They own SU and carry a good stock of needles.

George,

Do you not mean Burlen Fuel Systems Ltd in Salisbury?

The 01 needle has a 0.156" shank, I have used a modified version of this needle in the K3 for many years. I do not think there are any 0.090" or 0.100" needles with a 0.156" shank.

I think your only option will be to change the piston to one that accepts 0.125" shanked needles.

Peter.

Thanks for the comments. It might be easier to use a 1 1/2" HV type SU which takes the readily available 1/8" shank needles. I'm presuming that the size is ok as the J3 used 1 3/8" while the J4 used 1 5/8" ? Sort of in the middle....

Kind regards and a Happy Christmas to all.

if your damper has a larger hole for the needle then just get a sleeve made it fit the smaller size needles.

Apologies for the wrong address for Burlen - yes they are in Salisbury!

Burlen can supply needles with the .125 and .156 shank. The L2 carb has .125 fittinng and the NB .156.

George,

Can Burlen supply 0.090" and 0.100" needles with 0.156" shanks? They only list these sizes with 0.125" shanks in their needle profile charts. However 0.125" needles can be purchased with 0.125" and 0.156" shanks.

Peter.
