The original components I have all show remains of a very thin plating including the pipes, nuts and the tap itself. They may have been flash chromed or possibly even nickel plated, difficult to be absolutely sure after so many years. It may not have survived for long and may have rubbed off with polishing easily. There could well have been variations on this because the two short main and reserve pipes and their nuts were also sometimes painted and came in two different shapes. Finishes for items like this may also well have varied during the production run. The clips which hold the fuel pipe to the side of tank were also usually plated but the 2 ba nuts were not and are very often rusted solid on to the mounts. The plinth that the fuel tap screws in to which is soldered to the top of the tank is painted body colour with the tank.
Will try and sort out the other info you asked for over the weekend Simon.

Many thanks, Terry. From the way you describe it, the tank could well have been supplied complete with vent, main and reserve pipes with their nuts, and the plinth for the tap, all of which were probably painted when the tank itself was being painted. Anything subsequently attached to the tank, i.e. the tap, the main fuel feed pipe and its clips were fitted as they were supplied. So perhaps the tap body, lever and clips came chrome (or nickle plated) plated but what about the main pipe itself - painted or chrome do you reckon? |
