Good morning all!
I just wondered if anybody has any further information, entry lists, results, photos or magazine reports from the 1933 MG Car Club Abingdon to Abingdon Trial, and specifically the entry of R A MacDermid?
Many thanks.

In the last days, there was a very nice silver ashtray in ebay, which was the award for MACDERMID in the 1933 "Abingdon to Abingdon". What a coincidence - - or perhaps you are the lucky bidder !!! Gerhard

Thank you Gerhard, and YES your suggestion is quite correct - I was thrilled to add this ashtray trophy to my MG motorsport collection! The fact that it was also a bargain made the acquisition even sweeter in my mind.
So do you know anything else about the event, MacDermid's entry, the car, etc?

I gather R A MacDermid later went on to become Captain of the works supported MG Car Company 'Three Musketeer' trials team, although I'm not sure what marque he was driving in 1933?

Surely some knowledgeable individual on here must have some information on the 1933 MG Car Club Abingdon to Abingdon Trial or R A MacDermid?
What about the actual date of the event, or even the date of an issue of Light Car magazine that features a report on the trial?
Who is R A MacDermid and what marque or car did he drive in 1933?

Hello David,
To my knowledge entry lists of the Abingdon to Abingdon trials are quite obscure. And as none of the trials experts on this forum (and there are at least two!) have replied yet, my guess is that there simply is no entry list available for 1933.
If you want to find out more on MacDermid, I suggest you get your hands on some of the must have books: British Trial Drivers, Their Cars & Awards 1929-1939 by Donald Cowbourne, M.G. Trials Cars by Roger Thomas and Wheelspin by C.A.N. May. You might want to get yourself a few Triple-M Register Yearbooks too: Getting the 1984, '85, '90, '93, '98 and the 2000, '05 and '06 editions should get you started! Some of these are still obtainable through this website.
Good luck! Cat

David,
Unlike your J4 pic, this is fairly easy for you to research (& probably why nobody else came forth with the info). MGCC Abingdon - Abingdon. 9th Sept 1933 Macdermid - J2416 2nd Class Award
References:
May, C. (1945) Wheelspin, London, G.T.Foulis & Co Ltd, 17-19. Hawke, M. (2010) How They Ran, (Privately Published), 38 & 162. Hawke, M. (2007) 75 Years of the M.G. J2, England, M.B. Hawke, 51-52.
J2416:
MG Magazine. 9/33, 11,33. MG Trials Cars. 18, 92. MG The Sports Car America Loved First. 25. Autocar. 26/05/33. Light Car. 23/12/32, 19/05/33, 26/05/33. Motor. 02/05/33, 23/05/33.
& lots of others, but that little lot should be more than enough to get you started

Please accept my apologies for my delayed responses to the last two posts - my PC at home has developed a fairly major fault, and I am quite limited to internet access otherwise. Anyway...
Thank you very much Cat & JH for your most enlightening posts - they were indeed very much appreciated.
Not owning a pre-war MG, I have never actually seen one of the seemingly renowned Triple M Yearbooks that you all hold in such high esteem - I know, shocking isn't it! So what kind of information can I expect to find in a typical Yearbook, and in particular, what detail am I likely to find on J2416 in the issues that you have mentioned Cat?
Likewise JH, many thanks for your list of references re J2416. Researching subjects in books and magazines seems so bizarre in this day & age! As I struggled to find any decent references on the net, I resorted to asking the question of the likes of yourself on this fine forum. Yet again the Triple M Register forum members have come up trumps!
I note some of the books that you have quoted seem to also have been supplied by Cat as well - 'Wheelspin' by C. A. N. May being a prime example. I need to source one of those for sure, although the values of a couple of the other books you mention might make them somewhat cost prohibitive from my point of view.
Do ANY of the reference materials stated have any photos of MacDermid in J2416 actually taking part in the 1933 MGCC Abingdon to Abingdon Trial?

David,
There are nineteen earlier MMM Yearbooks available to view on this web page, including four of the ones that Cat listed. Though I must admit, as others would, that you can't beat having a collection of these wonderful yearly editions. A tribute to past, and the present, Editor(s) and scribes.
Home- Document Downloads- Yearbooks.
Brian.
Edited: A little redundant, I see Cat did mention that they were on this web page. .......

Thank you Graham.
Yeah I saw Cat's comment Brian, but I assumed that 'Some of these are still obtainable through this website' meant they were available to purchase - not the download section that you were referring to.
Many thanks for the 'heads up' though - very much appreciated!

Thank you Brian.
Looking through the MMM Yearbooks that I have downloaded, the 1993 issue mentions an unblown J2 (Reg Nş JB859) as being used by 'Mac' MacDermid during the 1933 trial season, prior to the formation of the factory MG 'Cream Cracker' Team when he moved up to a PA. I gather the J2 is a non-survivor according to the same Yearbook though!
Another American source stated...
- Sam buys J2416 - Enters Le Mans (June 16th) but too late
Can I assume that J2416 would have been the very same J2 that 'Mac' used for the 1933 MGCC Abingdon to Abingdon Trial then?
Here is a photo that I found on the internet of the car in action on an unknown trial - somewhere in England...

David, the hill is Doverhay near Porlock. According to the Wheelspin website, the hill was last used in 1935.
Cheers

Hello David,
Yes, you can safely say he used J2416 all through the 1933 season and therefore in the Abingdon to Abingdon as well. The picture is believed to have been taken at the 1933 Experts' Trial. Source: 75 years of the J2 M.G. by Mike Hawke. You will notice Jeremy only mentioned his Dad's two books on J2s 'in passing' or so to speak, but they really are essential research material.
I think the only proper way to research Triple-M M.G.s is through books and, better still, original programmes and period magazines. However 'bizarre' this may seem!
Regards, Cat
