My PA arrived on a transporter with a pile of bits on the back seat! Upon removing the rear seat squab there is nothing between the seat plywood base and the axle etc which cannot be right.

One of the "spare" bits is a rusty piece of sheet metal roughly the size of the back seat with 2 indentations either side of the prop shaft. I assume that this is a floor pan and the seat should sit on top of it. Problem is the pan doesn't fit (which probably explains why it was on the back seat in the first place.

Can anybody help with a description of how the pan fits (maybe even a photo). Should the indentations lie downwards (in which case they are perilously close to the battery terminals - one way of keeping the back seat warm I suppose).

I suspect that the body height is too low to the road - rear springs shot maybe? Can anyone give me a measurement of something to compare it with. I have 19" wheels and 3.5/4.00 tyres.

Thanks John

I think that the spare bit is th original seat pan, it sure apperars to be similar to my L1 tourer's. Mine lies on a piece of timber contoured at the rear and on the similarily contoures plywood front "wall" just in front of the axle. I can ry to help you with photo etc if you e mail me directly with what you want. bispmotala@hotmail.com

Oh and I think this is good way of sharing ideas.

Best luck

Excellent - I will email you some photos.

I agree that its a good way of exchanging information. A good friend of mine was on an Australian site and was recommended a machine shop that was capable of doing a particularly obscure job on his chummy. The machine shop turned out to be not 500 yds from where we both live. None of us knew it was there!!!

Oh the battery problem.
On L2 types and J2 the battery is half under the petroltank so a short would be interesting. The factory in their wisdom provided a perfectly good solution for both sports models and tourers. A substantial lid. I made mine out of plywood and fitted a rubber mat on top. Looks nice.

Keep at it

Brian / Sven,

Thanks for that. Good idea re the battery box. I will make a top. My rear squab is just a flat piece of ply which has been upholstered. It is obviously a replacement since there is certainly no contouring to the pan and it's upholstered in PVC cloth. Looks like a job for next year to replace the rear seat with a proper leather one.

On the subject of rear suspension sag, I am told that my PA is sitting low. I got a measurement from road to a point on the body which confirmed that mine is 1 inch low. Is this excessive and does that mean new springs or can I get them re-set?
