I currently have the wings and headlights off the PB, beginning to strip things back to have a tidy up and check over the winter. I ll run the car in racing classes for the last few sprint events. Which will be fun!
Still has rear brake lights.
But can anyone tell me whether the car remains road legal. I ve seen plenty of Bugatti and other racing beasts without wings etc on the road.
Thanks

Mark - I MOT'd the Alvis Grenfell several times without wings & lights. There's a 'daylight' MOT which doesn't require headlamps and I persuaded the MOT man that the car never originally ran with wings However, that's all rather academic now as legally you don't need to MOT the car! It would just require persuading Plod (in the unlikely event of you being stopped) that wings were never originally fitted... or some other story about road testing and you're just on your way back home to fit them |

Mmmmmm
As you have pointed out Mark some of the Bugatti fraternity use their cars without wings. I have seen a few type 35s with lights but no wings.

Am I not right in thinking that the Type 35 never DID have wings? Its 43 road equivalent would have.
In the end though, irrespective of what was or was not fitted, surely Construction & Use, not to mention Health & Efficiency, would require the protection of pedestrians from these "Boadicea" scythes?

Most of the GP Bugatti's were not fitted with wings (T35, 37, 51, 54 59)... |

Sounds like an easy crime for Plod to add to their quota.

I was fined for towing a trailer without mudguards in daylight and it was dry. Don't expect any mercy if you are pulled over. Regards Ged Segrave |

I seem to recall that to legally run a car without wings it has to be pre 1932

As mentioned before, construction and use makes it a primarily healthy and safety issue. Your tyre will throw up spray and road debri with great " efficiency." There are written specifics for how the guards intercept the tyres' slingshot muck flinging. Does this make a cycle winged MMM car legal in a straight line and "cautionable" on 1/2 lock? Lights, I believe, do not have to be fitted in daylight. If fitted, an offence if faulty. Where visibility, such as fog interferes with this daylight... Whether you want to risk playing with the police, even having to walk home and getting it impounded, is the risk to bear. Whatever the law is, and isn't, should lie with the driver to be certain of.. Before setting out. The hotrod fraternty have this issue. Their cars are of various ages. They require to carry clip on fenders. One got stopped. Fitted them. Nicked. Didn't adequately cover the tread. It is a very pretty car. This, like a Bugatti, may may get you home from a local trip. I know of cars that have been stopped on their journey and prevented from being allowed to continue. Health and effic... oops Safety is the big growth area in EU law. You raise a salient point for early cars. With the Non MOT tag, albeit recently awarded... Are we living a charmed life? As with many of these postings- Issues are raised and never really chased down to a conclusion.

I would fit wings to the car; not just because the law insists on it but so not to be a nuisance to other road users should it rain. Common courtesy I would say.
