I have been asked by my tin basher and painter Nick Matthews if this is a J2 ? The gentleman in the photograph is his father and Nick recons that the photo is from the 1950s. Can I have confirmation please, it looks like a J2 to me,
I am new to the marque, Thanks

Yes, certainly a J2. Looks like an early flat back tank version. If you can identify a registration number I may be able to be more exact.

I purchased my first J2 in 1962 from a man in Lewes who had two for sale. The one I had was a red swept wing car MG 2819 (which has since disappeared) in very original condition. The other one was an early white cycle wing car with a bonnet strap. It was in rather poor condition I recall. The red one was £40 and the white one £25. I cannot say for sure but maybe it was this car. Could the location tie in Chris ?

Terry - you are giving your age away! A J2 for. £25 is amazing but that was quite a lot of money back then.
It would be quite a coincidence if this is the car you purchased, can you recall the Registration number?

MG 2819 was the registration number of J3659. There is a period photograph of the car at the bottom of page 5 in the 1996 Yearbook. I paid £35 for my J2 (J3656) in 1965. The build date of both cars was 21st September 1933. |

Hello TH, Yes it does tie in. Nick performs his ( excellent ) operations in Washington ( village in West Sussex, not far from Worthing ). I will pass on these details to Nick tomorrow. His father is still alive, I will ask if he can recall any more information. Thanks, it sounds promising.

That's amazing John I never spotted that photo of MG 2819 and had no record of the chassis number. It says photos from the late 60,s so after my ownership. The headlamps have been changed but it is definitely my first car. Robin is this chassis number recorded ? Mike Hawke told me it was last known in the mid 80's and may have been sold overseas.
