Has anyone the external dimensions and weight of an M-Type two seater ?.

I have acquired a car, and would like to see if it will fit in the back of my 1998 long wheelbase Transit Van.

An M-Type would just look silly on a tandem car trailer !.

I have searched all the MG books I have available to me at the moment (most are still packed away), and I cannot find this key information.

cheers

Tony

Hi Tony,
Just measured mine and it is 4'2" wide by 10'2" long. Blower tells me that the weight of the 2 seater is 10cwt 14lbs. On a good day I am able to pick the back of the car up on my own, even if only briefly! Predictably most of the weight is at the front.
Hope this helps.
Good luck,
Keith

Tony,

I recently transported a J2 chassis with axles and wheels fitted to the paint shop using a LWB Transit.

Not sure if this helps!

Best Regards,

JOHN

I've just remembered that when I have tried to get an M type onto a trailer the battery box, half way between the axles, hangs down very low and tends to catch at the top of steep ramps. You might find that loading in a forwards direction might allow you to lift the rear of the car when it catches the ramps.

You could always tow it with an A Frame.
Have done many miles with my M on tow without any ill effects.

What's the legal position on towing with an a frame if its not a breakdown?

Thanks All, I am concerned about the ground clearance to the battery box, so might build a transition on the ramps. First job is to install the winch in a handy spot & some tie downs for "Midge"...

I have moved the TA Tickford rolling chassis with this van, but missed closing the back doors by about 4". Good enough, got the job done with rope holding the doors closed !.

I have always understood that to tow legally with an A-Frame the towed car must appear to be a trailer, so that it must weigh less than half the tow car and be fitted with a trailer board with the tow car's numberplate on it. I have towed my M-Type from Hampshire to Scotland using motorways like that without attracting the attention of passing police cars. John

I agree with John.
Apparently it is illegal to tow a "broken down" vehicle ONTO a Motorway in the UK
Usually an A-framed MMM car on the Motorway will be taxed, insured and maybe MOT'd - so certainly not broken down.
You can, however tow a broken down vehicle OFF a Motorway.
You often see large motorhomes on Motorways with a small A framed vehicle attached to the back - so if it is OK for them it must be OK for us.
Don't know what the situation is on the continent - I think that some countries forbid A framed vehicles.
Can our continental cousins comment please.

This useful site probably gives you all the information you need about towing in the UK

Could I trouble someone for the front track width please ? - time to make some front wheel stops for the winch bar (bolted to the van floor).

And the rolling circumference of the tyres ?.

TIA
