It may indeed have been, but it was apparently only finished for a car show in Seattle a couple of weeks ago. But how come you (i.e. Oliver!) never suggested putting a flathead V8 in my J2? ![](images/icon_smile_big.gif)

I glanced quickly through the linked website, trying not to be too horrified. One comment that caught my eye and left me with a wry smile was this reference to the chrome plated wheels: "The original wheels on the J2 were painted, so I'm taking liberty with originality". Coming from the man who has just converted a J2 to a flathead V8 left hand drive hotrod in which nearly every detail is wrong, I think that chrome wires is the least of his worries.

I can't disagree with any of the pities heaped upon this car, but at least it was resurrected and a driving car, and not left to rot away is someone's barn. Whereas it is wrong in many (most?) respects it does keep the name alive and to those who may not know or remember there was such a thing as an MG J2, provides a little knowledge where some may have not existed before.

Would this car really drive well?
Would it handle well on corners? Are those brakes really up to the job? How long will the diff last?
Or is it really more about posing than driving?
It was exciting to see the reaction of the crowd. It was positioned on the field such that as you approached it, the bonnet was closed. Folks would see it and be interested in the car. Then, as they walked around the other side, discovering the little V8 in it, they would get a big smile as they saw what was in there. The car won first place in it's class, validating that even though it was modified, it won the hearts of many enthusiasts. The car was circled with people all day long checking it out.
Did anyone drive it?

Sam, there's only one way to be sure. As luck would have it, there is one of these very engines (with original gearbox) on ebay. A snip at £1800!

Having read the whole article I'd have to say that the guy came across as a real enthusiast, a nice guy and far from a poser. Would that I had his skiils (and his workshop). He just had a different take on it from most of us but I think the end result is impressive. Plus, I reckon you could rebuild a flathead V8 for a lot less than a Triple-M engine .

Yes he does sound like a nice guy and he is very skilled. This is a matter of taste. Perhaps I should have asked -
Is this car really more about exhibiting than driving?

I suspect the MGCC remit does not run in that part of the world. Had he known of the capabilities of MMM engines and that spares aer available he might have gone down the more normal restoration route. I am full of praise for the quality of his work and his vision that one day someone might want to put it back to original.
Cars come up for sale regularly, if not often, and are usually reported here. Maybe we as a club should look after them better by informing sellers and purchasers of the club's existence and the help and advice available so that they can draw on the collective experience.
