I am after a period and hopefully correct type of Lucas dip/switch fitted to the dashboard for my F2. This type is the one holding the central mirror in place like the J2 and L2's. A nice working one would be preferable. Photo of item needed below, central to the dash board ...

Thank you, Chris, for printing the picture of my car's dashboard which I sent to you a few years ago!
I am still able to produce engine turned dashboards for anyone who may be in need of one - either to a template or to the original size/shape.

Chris, The one in your photo looks remarkably like the later T-type pushbutton. All of the pre-war ones I'm familiar with have a larger diameter horn button - so large that it is difficult extracting the mounting screws without nicking the side of the knob. I have a spare one for a T-type, but the large knob ones are difficult to find. Either will work, but to be perfectly correct....

Peter,
The one on fleaBay seems to be the later type that Lew refers to with the smaller diameter horn button. It also doesn't seem to have the base that goes between the switch and the dashboard. In fact the mirror stand should be fitted between the switch and the base and not between the base and the dashboard as shown in the photo above. But to do that, you need the correct switch with a wider base as well as the wider button.

Hi Simon and thanks for providing an accurate photo of the correct type. However, I suspect functionally the T-type switch will do? ... especially now I have bought one ... mind you, £20 isn't bad!

Indeed, Chris, the T Type one will work (it's what I have in my J2 for the moment) except that the mirror stand ends up being fitted between the base and the dash instead of between the base and the body of the switch. But men on galloping horses, etc. and as you say, twenty quid isn't at all bad. You wouldn't get the proper one for anything near that I fear.

Simon J is mistaken in stating that the mirror bracket is mounted directly against the dashboard in Bloodysalmon's photo of my dash in this topic. The detail is not very clear in the photo and I will try to attach another to clarify - the size of the pushbutton may well be incorrect, however. Graham R.

I also believe that the correct pre-war ones have "D" and "H" pressed into the outer ring (per Simon's photo above), whereas I've never seen a post-war switch so engraved.

Graham, having used your photo to show the switch, it made me think what are all the other button's switches doing?

What I'm wondering is why you're all talking about 'correct' type switches when you don't seem to care about correctly naming car types ...

According to the Register Chris has an F1, not an F2. Whatever you want it to resemble in looks, it remains an F1. Calling it an F2 is simple falsification. Reinventing history. Worrying.
