Hello, Forum.
Herewith a picture of my car in it’s original form presumably with the first owner, F.C..N. Day who was a Lt. Commander R.N.
Date on the back of the picture is shown as 4/5/35. ( Cecil Kimber standing with camera nearby ) Who is standing next to him ?
Can anyone give further details of the Abingdon Trials or point me in the right direction ?

C.K. seems to have had good taste in cameras! Is that a Leica round his neck?

Maybe - but an earlier model than mine, for which I bought the s/h body with my paper round money in 1963. Cost £45 at the time .....

I recall you said you had one Dick when we met at Stoneleigh a few years ago and you commented on my Fujifilm digital camera that looks so similar. But C.K.'s camera seems to have more visible satin chrome on the top and bottom plates than a contemporary Leica - hence my question mark.

Mine is a IIIf (black dial) from c.1951, so very modern compared with CKs, which might have been a straight III or IIIa..

Interesting reading but at the end of the piece it says Roy Marsh went to South Africa in 1933 and stayed there. My picture is dated 1935.
It does appear, however, that he was a pioneer in advocating the founding of an MG Car Club.

Chris. Splendid picture of your car at Abingdon. Roger Thomas book tells us that the Trial took place on the 4th May 1935 in good weather. There were 115 entries and 108 cars started. Best performance was put up by J H Summerfield in his PA (probably JB4611) and the Team Prize went to Macdermid, Bastock and Toulmin. There were 40 First Class Awards and 17 Second Class Awards.
I have a rather brief report which appeared in "Light Car" of 10th May 1935 which does not mention Mr F C N Day and unfortunately the Results appeared on a different page which I do not have. Possibly some of our contributors might have this copy of "Light Car" but if no one comes forward I am sure that the VSCC Library or the NMM will be able to supply the Results page. Our own website contains copies of "The Sports Car" for downloading but unfortunately these do not include the later editions. I had hoped to attach a copy of the page I have but I seem to be unable to this for some strange reason.

F.C.N.Day does not feature in the results quoted in the June 1935 Motor Sport on page 354. However they only quote the Trophy winners and the First Class awards, and he may have received a Second or Third Class award.
What were his Christian names, he should be fairly easy to find in Ancestry or one of the other websites. Being in the Navy, his war service may be interesting!

Thanks for your reply. Funny you should mention J.H. Summerfield as I have the original preselector gearbox from his 1933 K type K0300 Reg. No. JB 1705.
My box No. FG 73 was removed and replaced by the works on the 12th May, 1935. (See picture one ) This box was rebuilt by E.N.V. and never used again until I bought it from Peter Gregory some years ago.

Chris in answer to your question, the picture must have been taken in South Africa as the number is not an British one, having five numbers in it, so it must have been taken later than 1933.

Apart from the fact that Kevin said the photo was taken in the early 60s, the car is a T Type, so definitely after 1933
