There is now an Oxford-style guarantee plate available on eBay, but it is not quite the right style for the M-type IMO. However, Kevin came to the rescue and the lovely reproduction (and I like that it can be seen to be a reproduction, because the engine number is not stamped), but I think it has the right look:
Rob, I'm pleased to see that you are using the original under bonnet valences on your car. When I got my M Type in 1964 it had a poorly made modified body on it and when I rebuilt it I kept the valences despite their poor appearance. It was years later that I discovered the valences weren't part of the low grade body refurbishment that my car had had but were the original part. Sam Christie had an identical pair and now so have you. We deduced that they were probably made by the factory apprentices at the time as the timber appears to be "recycled" packing cases and the aluminium of very low grade. You probably couldn't make them to look like that now if you tried. Best regards, Keith
Thanks Keith - I think that may well be original. Much of the body frame is original, with some of the ash timber replaced where it was needed (not by me!) Sad that the original guarantee plate has been lost, but I am happy with this as a really nice reproduction replacement!
Hi Colin - sorry to have missed you at the spares show - came down with an absolutely evil cold! Yes - definitely need to collect the clock from you! Hopefully see you at a show soon
