This image was provided by Pam Murdoch, now in her 90s. Please could any information on the cars and owners be provided. Below are three close ups of the same image.

Mike Hawke with J2396, possibly within a year of being purchased.

Sub Lieutenant William Murdoch with his Riley are at the far right.

Here's a better copy of the same photo: The occasion is the RNEC Manadon Driving Test (July 1954) Cars & drivers (LtoR):
Chris Crossley (Austin A90), unknown (Lagonda 4.5), Mike Hawke (J2396), unknown (Riley Lynx), Toby Streatfield-James (Bullnose Morris), Chris Lawrence (Hillwood Special), Dickie Songer Bentley 3.0) Bill Murdoch (Riley Special). The Royal Navy's finest young Engineering Officers! I'm sure I have it written down somewhere that the Riley Special was in fact an Imp body on an entirely different chassis.

Many thanks, Jeremy.

I will share these names with Pam, who had a M Type purchased in 1951 or '52. She used to drive from Norwich to Plymouth to see Bill Murdoch in the M. They went to Singapore in mid 1950s, and returned to England in early 1960s. Both raced cars there and here.

Thank you again.

The "Riley special" is actually a Riley 9 engine in a Morris Minor chassis with a facsimile of Riley Brooklands bodywork. It's still in existence.

Thanks Duncan. For a small club the RNEC Motor Club were, I think, typical of clubs in what must have been a golden age with not much in the way of rules/regs & restrictions that we have now. They ran Road Rallys, Sprints etc (closed roads around the college!) & even entered a team in the 750MC 6hr relay race at Silverstone each year:

Great pic of your Dad Jeremy. Typical pose with right arm outside of car as usual.

When I left school in 1959 I did a sandwich course in civil engineering, my work part was with the Ministry of public buildings and works, in the structural engineering department. In 1960 a month or two into my time there (my drawing is dated June 1960) the work we were doing on Spadeadam, something to do with Blue streak, now unclassified, was halted and I was given a job to design and draw up a new access road with associated drainage to RNEC Manadon. I enjoyed it so much I went into road and drainage design. So I have something to thank RNEC Manadon for.
