This is a 1931 ad for the M-Type, taken from the book Advertising MG by Daniel Young and published by P4 Spares in 1989 (ISBN 0 9511760 6 4).

It is often said that with the hood up it is hard to get in and out of an M-Type. Apparently, the factory had a solution an took a full page ad in the January 2, 1931 issue of The Light Car to inform their (potential) clients.

Although the illustration shows the hood mostly removed, unclipped from both the windscreen and the boot lid, the text says "Complete ease of getting in or out is obtained by simply undoing the press stud on the side of the windscreen and replacing afterwards".

It neglects to mention undoing the fastenings at the rear to achieve the hood rolled back as per the illustration.
Well, good luck with that, whilst sitting in the car and attempting to turn round to do it. Even worse if you had a driver in there as well !!
Personally, I never had any issue with that in over 56 years of M ownership. But then I never had any sort of hood.

Next time I have the hood up, I'm going to try to get in/out with just "undoing the press stud on the side of the windscreen" as per the ad. It may be a while though as I've used to hood only two times in the 22 years ;-)

We are bigger and taller than our 1930's forefathers', so the design ergonomics of motor car/sports car then, did not envisage us larger older/new millennium Triple-M owners...!!!....a reason for M Type hood access problems...???

Mike Allison once told me that the factory publicists used small people in publicity pics. of M-types to make the car look bigger !!

A long departed dear friend Dr Jack Armstrong had an M as his car in 1930. He said that in Winter, with the hood up, the only way to see where you were going was to lean your head out round the windscreen - then, he said you got covered in dirt from traffic going the other way.

I tried the hood up once on my M .... and once was enough to convince me it was entirely impractical.

The man himself, and his M Type, on the Antrim Coast Road.

Hi Simon, I note that the car in the picture has rear hinged doors but the brakes are cable on the front plus a wiper motor. Any idea when the car was built 2M1272

I believe the historical master of the exercise was Harry Hoodini.

I think we should hold a timed contest at a MMM event - get into the M with the hood up! My P with hood erected and my MGA coupe are bad enough...

Cheers,

#128513;

My Grandfather was the same height as me (6'5") and delivered cars for MG in period. I suspect that like me he just got wet. With Minor saloons he took the front seat out and drove from the back - I tried this once and got huge backache hunching forward to reach the wheel.

Bob,
The registration number is BZ 277 and my understanding is that the BZ series started in April, 1930 so that would certainly fit with the change to full Bowden cable brakes which it would seem, occurred at the same time as the move to Abingdon at the end of 1929. I’ve no knowledge of M Type doors, however!

A much more interesting spectacle would be a competition of people getting out of an M-Type with the hood up.

We had a very large relation who used to drive his Austin 7 from the back seat - so not so uncommon

Yes, getting out would be better to watch - but perhaps more dangerous to car and human subject?

Cheers,
