Here is another picture. Sadly this one is almost completely ruined by a double exposure. It is appears to have been photographed at Craigantlet on the same day as CZ 2093.
Can this one be identified?

The Registration number 084 X1 is not listed in the 2013 printed Register.
The car looks like a J2 with 8 inch brakes and a front mounted supercharger - and front apron which looks very J3?

The 084 XI registration is almost certainly a Belfast garage trade plate so of no use in trying to identify the car. |

I thought the registration number looked really odd.
Since this picture looks like Craigantlet and we know that CZ 2093 appeared at Craigantlet on 26/08/1933 and also 25/08/34 and this picture is associated with it, would the number '20' on the front apron be of any help ?

Since Craigantlet is a hot topic on the Forum, I've written to the historian/archivist of the Ulster Automobile Club (who run the Hill Climb) to see if entry details for 1933, 34 and 35 are available. If so, then we can probably tidy up a lot of loose ends. |

Perhaps when you're done with your current article, you could move on to the next subject, Simon! After all, Mr Kimber himself drove ánd won at Craigantlet and with Sam's pictures, I can totally see it!

And while you're at it, would you mind asking for 1931 and '32 as well? |

Cat,
If you want to see what the hill is like this video - http://youtu.be/VpzMwWLSfv0 - will give you a good idea. I live just round the corner from the hill (and Sam is even closer) but it's a few years since I've been to the event and hadn't realised they've added the silly chicane with cones just before May's Cross. Many, many years ago I entered in a friend's TF and the really quick guys contesting the British Hill Climb Championship in Cosworth engined single seaters could have given me a minute's start and still beaten me to the top. Mind you, that probably says as much about my driving as it does about theirs!
I am actively pursuing entry lists and will add 31 and 32 to the list although wouldn't that just be boring C types rather than Js? |

Cat,
Methinks an M type would struggle at Craigantlet. You could probably use an egg timer to time it!
And if you're wondering where the hedge is that is visible in the photos Sam posted, in recent years the start was moved up the hill so that the current main road (which cuts across the hill climb at May's Cross) can be used as the return road for the competitors. Previously the start was further down the hill (where the hedge still is) and so the competitors had to return along the same road as they went up which often caused delays.
When I was home in Belfast a couple of weeks ago I took the J2 out one evening and did a run up Craigantlet and then went on to do a lap of the TT circuit which is nearby. Not so shabby, eh? |

My data says an 847cc Midget went up the hill in 1931 and came second in the Std Sports Car Class upto 860cc. The driver was one SJC Cupples. Might even have been a D-type !

Cat,
On the other thread that Sam started with the photos of a number of J2s, you'll see that Jeremy Hawke has concluded that one of them is being driven by the same J. S. C. Cupples. (It's a nice quirk of the formality of Britain in those days that people were rarely referred to by their first names, but rather by initials, complete with a full stop and a space after each initial!) Sadly the UAC tell me that they have no more information on the earlier entries so we'll just have to see if anyone at home has some old programmes lying around.
And here's a map of the hill climb showing where the hedge is and the former and current start lines. The course follows the Belmont Road and the Ballymiscaw Road is the new one that cuts across the old hill. And apparently the chicane was added after someone was killed after losing it at May's Cross where the levels between the old road and the new can catch out the unwary, especially at high speed.

Ah, so I see! But with the event being held in August 1931, he can't have been driving a J2, can he?! |

No, but the other thread shows photos almost certainly taken in 1933. |

I'll take a stab at this one: J2024 driven by V.S. Ferguson. The car described (by Abingdon) as the "J3 Prototype", which did Craigantlet in 1933. Converted back to J2 spec & thought to have been in Ireland if it still existed (MBH), but turned up in Swindon in the 60s (the former owner contacted me just after Dad died). Sold to a young chap in the Devizes area (who still has it) with the ubiquitous F**d lump fitted.

Thanks for posting and sharing the photo Sam. It would be nice if the photo matched the MG publicity department advertisement of the June '33 event: http://www.flightglobal.com/FlightPDFArchive/1933/1933%20-%200091.PDF although it also appears to have run in September 1933. If the J2 photos are from the same event, did Cupples also run in September?
It is certainly an interesting member of the J-type family - does anyone have more information or other photos of J2024 / 084 XI?
Cheers & many thanks, Tim
