I came across this photo whilst trawling the internet.

http://www.allposters.co.uk/-sp/Horses-Pulling-Broken-Down-MG-Up-a-Hill-During-a-Trial-1930-s-Posters_i4150709_.htm

I have no idea what the car is, or if the photo has been seen before, but the registration RC 1985 doesn't appear on the 2010 register.

I vaguely remember one of the articles I wrote for Safety Fast! quite a few years back had a similar picture. I think it was an N type (Hamlet?) and the owner was an architect near Cambridge - but that may simply be deluded ramblings - who said 'usual' ?

RC 1985 is (or was?) NA0309.

The same photo was in the 1980 MMM YearBook on page 35, with the caption
"This year's picture of an MG in distress shows a two horsepower NA. No doubt Colin Butchers will be able to tell us where."

I don't know what that "know-all" Butchers said in 1980, but his answer now is "I don't know"! The trial is the 1938 Lands End and the driver of NA0309 is P A Clare who retired from the event. My first reaction was that the hill was Kipscombe - except that the 1938 Trial did not include that hill. The hills used were Doverhay (bikes only), Lynton Station Lane, Beggars Roost, Barton Steep, Darracott, Crackington, New Mill, Hustyn, and Bluehills 1 and Bluehills 2. My 2014 guess is that it is Darracott.

The two horses were called Blossom and Dobbin (that is not true - I made that bit up !)

I wonder if the driver is related to our erstwhile Registrar Bob Clare!

Just watched the 1939 Motor Cycling Club film in which Blossom & Dobbin are on Darracott!
There are no scenes of Darracott in the 1938 film.
