I have just bought the PB, reg MG 4396, (MMM No 2)That my dad owned during the 60's. I'm hoping to have it up and running for the Kimber, dependent on what we find in the re-commissioning process!. Dad tells me that it had trials history pre-war in the hands of 'F.C.N.Day', but can't remember who he bought it from in @1961 in the Chipping Sodbury area. If any of you know any other history I'd love to hear. Its pretty much in the same condition as when dad sold it to Paul Fletcher in 1972, as Paul kept using it/trialling it, from then until @4 years ago. Look forward to hearing any snippets. regards Kim Dear |

Hi Kim
Welcome to the Forum on two counts! ![](images/icon_smile.gif)
Your first posting, and secondly the purchase of your Dad's very well known PB with Triple-M Register number 2. I can well remember seeing it being raced hard at Silverstone.
I recall Steve Dear sold the car to the late Paul Fletcher when he found and purchased PB Cream Cracker JB7521.
JB7521 is to be entered into trials by it's new owners and it would be great if you were able to enter the car also. Enjoy!

Kim,
This is great news. Just don't do what dad did once and put water in the petrol tank instead of petrol! Do hope you can make it to the Kimber-any chance that you take after dad in the telling of after dinner stories/ Car would be good for the Grand Prix de Puy as well.
Welcome to the MMM brigade,
Alan |

You might think the Register would have tons of info on Register no 2, but you would be wrong, just a few pics, mostly of Steve in action! I'll post a few in a day or so...

The 1981 Yearbook has an article by Mike Allison on the first 20 years of the Register. Therein is a list of the first few cars including at least the first 10, so that might be a bit more info on #2 and it's then owner.

Sorry, make that the 1982 Yearbook, article by Mike Hawke. That's what I get for relying on my memory.

Hi Kim,
Very cool news, congratulations! Midgetpowerrr!
Here's what Donald Cowbourne's 'British Trail Drivers, Their Cars & Awards 1929-1939' holds on F.C.N. Day:
SUNBAC Colmore Trial - 23 February 1935 Entry no. 110 Third Class Award M.G. 1287cc
MCC Land's End Trial - 10 & 11 April 1936 Entry no. 195 Bronze Award M.G. PB Midget 936cc MG 4396
It also says a picture of the PB appeared in an issue of The Light Car & Cycle Car magazine, presumably the one Brian posted.
No idea what car he used for the Colmore ...
Trials included in the book are the MCC Land's End, Exeter, Edinburgh, Sporting, Scarborough, Llandudno, Torquay, London-Gloucester and the Le Jog trials, rallies and runs, the B&HMC Brighton-Beer trials, the SUNBAC Colmore trials and the International Alpine trials.
Cheers, Cat

Hello Cathellijne My P.A AVP 342. chassis No. 1997 also competed 1935-1936 in the same events as above, gaining 5 Premier awards plus other awards. Please can you confirm the drivers/owners name. is it A.E Lambert or A.J.Lambert. purchase and Guarantee records carry both sets of Initials on various documents, perhaps your book can help with the answer. who knows, maybe they were brothers ! Regards, Derek Moore, (Adrian's dad) |

Hi Adrian's Dad ,
Adrian asked me to have a look a few days ago, but when he came back with Lambert's initials being A.E., I figured the A.J. I found was a different Lambert ...
Here's A.J.'s entries:
MCC Exeter Trial - 27 & 28 December 1935 No. 256 847cc Midget Premier Award + a 'Simms Hill' Trophy
SUNBAC Colmore Trophy Trial - 22 February 1936 No. 17 847cc Midget s/c Second Class Award
MCC Land's End Trial - 10 & 11 April 1936 No. 244 847cc Midget Premier Award
MCC Edinburgh Trial - 29 & 30 May 1936 No. 182 847cc Midget Premier Award
MCC Torquay Trial & Rally - 17 & 18 July 1936 No. 98 847cc Midget s/c Premier Award
MCC Sporting Trial - 7 November 1936 No. 74 847cc Midget Bronze Award
Regards, Cat

What a splendid photo, Adrian! The highlight of last year's Kimber Trial was seeing you chauffeuring dad. Hopefully we will have two father and son crews this year. Strangely I was down on Exmoor a couple of weeks ago and was reminded of a couple of incidents back in the 70's when driving along with Paul on the Land's End. Happy days! Happy MMM'ing, Alan

Alan, I am really hurt that you have not mentioned Ecurie Butchers in the father and sons teams. Perhaps it was because we were a DNF last year, but we hope to do better this year. The only difference between our team and the others is that the father still insists on doing the driving whilst son does the navigating (and the repairs !).

Colin,
I am mortified-please accept my sincere apologies. I do, of course, look forward to seeing the Ecurie Butchers in action again this year. Next year, providing school holidays coincide, my grandson Rhys will be navigating the J2.
kind regards,
Alan
