Lew,
I am stating the facts as recorded on the new database which have been copied from the original paper chassis files. Unfortunately there is no record of what the original Registration Number was for chassis number 2M 3342.

Which car does the history relate to - PJ 3200? or PDN 196?

Perhaps the "comprehensive documentation and history running back to the forties" is the key. Has anyone seen the press reports from November 1945?

Hi all. As I said in a reply which has been lost due to the system outage, a 2/ prefix was attached by the factory to a replacement engine. This partially accounts for the engine number looking like a chassis number, but not completely. My guess is that in re-registering the car at some time, this confusion resulted in the car gaining the number PJ 3200, originally issued to chassis 2m3101.
The pic of the knuckle will reveal all! (Or will it?)
Regards, Graham

The picture of the chassis number confirms that the car is 2M 3342.

Very good pictures Jacken.
The number '74' indicates your gearbox was originally fitted to a Morris Minor - hence the very high '3990' serial number.
These were once very abundant and a very easy and a common modification on M-types although the original factory fitted three speed gearbox is actually very acceptable. My own M-type had one fitted when I bought it (also '74') but it is now converted back to three speed. Other examples are '50' indicating Wolseley Hornet (first car fitted with this pattern of gearbox) and '72' and '117' are MG J-type.
Here is another '74' example.

Sorry, I should have said in my last post, that both The 1954 continuation log book has the 1990 Vehicle Registration Document both have PJ 3200 as the registration numbers. So I think it is a previous Registrar that has recorded the 2M3101 from the 1954 log book and not checked the knuckle. There is a letter from the original owner dated 1976 that he bought the car in 1932 and re-upholstered the car in real hide 1967! Will put all the papaerwork on the website shortly!

The confusion seems to come from a time when Mr. Sherlock Joslyn Humphries of the Metropolitan Police Force owned the car.
Do chassis files exist for 2M 3101 or for 2M 3342? When were the cars registered?
Is it possible to discover if Mr. Sherlock Joslyn Humphries of the Metropolitan Police Force was ever a member of the MG Car Club or had access to the MG factory files?

Jacken! As I could not remember if the car had a three or a four gearbox when I helped Stefan to start the car when he got it from Rex Collection I phoned a guy who had driven it at least 10 Swedish miles in the beginning of Stefan Sergels ownership and some day before Pär Skogslind bought the car. And what he remember no one had touch the car in Sweden so he was sure the four speed gearbox had been installed in England! By the way on my 2M 1686 I have the same Morris box but with number 10890/74 bought from Bill Thomson years ago. I would like to ask Sam Christie: I have three 3-speed boxes here 13233, 2566 and 1906 A. Which one ought to be on 2M 1686?

Did this car have 4 Ali wheel trims (as in photo) at one stage? If so when I worked for Barry gillies one of his Riley customers bought in a photo album containing photos of the M type when it was new, it was owned by one of his relatives , I'm sure its the same car. I'll see if I can contact him and get him to tell all! Oliver |
