To answer some of the questions! 2M2250 had a build date of 21 October 1930 and engine 2015A 2M2703 had a build date of 27 March 1931 and engine 2478A
2M2246 had a build date of 21 October 1930 and engine 2008A 2M2256 had a build date of 23 October 1930 and engine 2009A 2M2258 had a build date of 23 October 1930 and engine 2010A I think there was a "pile" of engines and they took the nearest!
The build book states that from 2M3135 they were 1932 models and that I think is the first metal body.

Looking at the parts list, does anyone know what the 'Packing for front wing brackets', 'Backing plates", and 'Packing for backing plates' were for and what they looked like? I don't seem to have any of these, (unless I have them and don't realise it). |

I understood that the metal body was an option offered in the last year of the M. I have been collecting photos of M's for a long time & there are many examples of cars after 2M 3135 with fabric bodies although these may be replacement bodies.

Re dynamos, the OHC Minor changeover from slim (Lucas DEL214)to fat (Lucas DDS5) dynamos took place at chassis M15136, and presumably, the M engine would have changed at roughly the same point in time. M15136 was laid down at Cowley 18.10.29. However, engines were delivered from Morris Engines in Coventry by the lorry load and therefore engines were not fitting on the production line in strict numerical order. Also of course, engines were built (and dynamos ordered from Lucas) well in advance of engines being delivered and fitted at Cowley.
Weren't the later M's fitted with Rotax dynamos? |

Mike, you stated that 'The build book states that from 2M3135 they were 1932 models and that I think is the first metal body.' 3134 was built 25.8.31 and the next chassis, 3135, was built 17.9.31. The gap in dates represents the summer shut-down of the works and coincided with the update of the production line to accommodate the new season's models (1932 in this case).
Looking at the parallel Minor production records, chassis SV5535 was laid down 17.7.31 and the next chassis SV5536 was laid down 12.8.31 and the Morris build book quotes '1932 Production' against chassis SV5536.
So it is interesting to note that the summer shut-down dates for Morris at Cowley and MG at Abingdon did not coincide in 1931. I'd be interested to see the MG summer shut-down dates for the earlier seasons when M types were being built in Oxford.
