I have 4 numbers to book in, all D-types:
'0407 BK' '0484 BK' '0430 BK' and '0321', the last and earliest without a colour reference.

Hello Robin
My J2 bonnet has J 3355 BK stamped on the hinge and is still black.

I think you intended to say Chassis number 0543 and not body number?

Hi Robin, The hinge on my J3, attached, has the addition of "7" which I believe relates to 750cc capacity. Does CR just mean cream, or is it cream/red? The rivet partly oblitorating the figure 3 was done by Fred Hill in the 1940s when he fitted an aluminium bonnet. Regards, David

J2020 is also marked with a CR, although the factory records show the car as painted Green. Certainly there are traces of the original green paint in various places, not least on the underside of the bonnet.
![](http://www.triple-mregister.org/forums/uploads/Ant/20123123148_DSCF2047.JPG) I am informed by several in the MMM community that at the factory if they could not lay their hands on the right letter, they would sometimes use the nearest equivalent - in this case the C rather than a G.

Robins C 7 R for his J3 could well be GR if the factory ran short of a letter G

This is the bonnet stamp for J2332 (originally "two greens"). To my eye, this also looks as if the "G" may have been created from a combination of "C" and "7" stamps. Colin

Mine is another J-type which was originally painted british racing green (not two tone) with a funny looking "G" in the stamping - photo below. Cheers, Tim

I just found the old hinge from PA1169. It was too torn up to reuse, but I rescued the portion with the stamped number. The car was originally black and will be again. The thing I'm curious about is the font used on the bonnet hinge stamp. Has anyone ever seen numbers like those in the attached photo?

The attached photo is of the hinge on L2023.
I agree with the notion that the stampings for the letter G certainly look like the letter C with the number 7 stamped to make it look like a G. Perhaps the dye for the letter G had been lost.![](images/icon_smile.gif)
I have not seen any bonnet with the form of stamping as used on Lew's hinge.

George. Is the front engine cross tube accessible on your L2. I would be most grateful if you can provide this number to correlate with your chassis number of L2023. I am trying to find another route to find an approximate date of manufacture for a L1 special which had the chassis shortened to L2 and its chassis number filed off when re registeredm in 1947 after the war. On the L1 it has the number 173 stamped between the steering box lugs. Difficult to see with the body in place unless you are a dentist! I believe that these tubes could indicate an approximate production date, especially as the L1 was the first frame to carry a large cam engine. On the small cam engines the numbers for J are in the thousands. On this L1 the number is within 20 of the candidate chassis number derived from the engine number, as fitted, in 1947. Thanks in advance. It is good to be back in the UK and seeing all that is going on in the MMMM Allan |

Hi Jos, I think I have to add the possible L1 chassis + 251 as I think your L2 is number 86. The L1 series may have started at 0251. Kimber did not like low numbers on the first of a series. I will do the sums, many thanks your numbers may well support my theory. This is that your chassis could be the 366th L series frame. Allan |
