The car has been on the market on and off for a long time.

I love Bonhams' multiple references to this car's J2 heritage, when it started out as a sedate (and lovely) J1 salonette. Another one bites the dust....

But then; "1933 M.G. J1 Sallonette Special" doesn't have quite the same ring to it as a description, even though it would actually be a bit more accurate (personal view of course)!

To be fair, unlike more recent MMM examples a perfectly acceptable "runner" didn't get the chop to create it decades ago.

I took a fairly close look at this car and had a good read through what was represented as a complete restoration file... I dropped out of the bidding at about £32,000 and as noted the car sold for £39,000 at the hammer. In my opinion this car was simply not as advertised and that's why perhaps it appears "cheap". In actual fact and again just my view the car sold at a quite high price for what it actually is. As described above this was never a J2, but simply a J1 with a pretty J4 style to it. It certainly does not have a J4 750cc engine and again the seller and the auction house simply advertised the engine number as on the historic and current documents. The Triple M Register shows this car as having a "new block". The engine was very likely replaced when converted to its current form and seems to have a bored out and sleeved 847cc engine with a Rootes blower added. Note also that in the past 10 years the car has managed to break 2 crank shafts. I intended to run the car stripped as a VSCC race car once we had sorted the engine, etc. But it did look quite pretty!

Hi Peter

Pity the car did not meet your requirements, it would be nice to see you back on the race tracks in a Triple-M car.

I hope you will soon find a car.

Looks a nice car and a bargain for the buyer at £44850 including premium but not such a good deal for the vendor at £39,000 less commission. That must bring the net sum received under current quality J2 values.
Doubt if you could build a good J4 rep for this amount. Not sure whether it really matters a great deal whether, as a rep, it is built on a J1 or J2 chassis although I suppose you could argue that the J4's were originally built on modified J2 chassis.
Did I not see this car in a recent Naylor Bothers ad in a picture of their workshop ?

Good luck... this car has been around for quite some time and the asking was always around £55,000. I wasn't sure whether the car sold in the auction room or on the telephone but I find it hard to believe a dealer would punt at close to £45,000 all in and then run the risk of a sale at the old, unachievable, price of £55,000. I agree that it makes little difference whether this "Special" was built up from a J1 or a J2... my only issue was that it should be advertised as what it is not what the vendor thinks will increase its value.

If its as good as it looks in the pics then it will easily make 55k if you compare it to these Q type reps they sell week in week out for 55k and there's no mmm parts on them it's all t type. To build that car today if you payed £12000 for a wreak it would easily cost 45k when finished. That's the way I look at things.

I believe VAT at 20% is also payable on Bonham's 15% buyers premium which will take the total cost of the car to around £46020, unless I have my sums wrong? Which I did.
