Looking around the German internet sites, there is no doubt that the original Bosch 009 distributor had the 3rd cylinder retarded by 3 degrees over the full range. Bosch has stopped production, and it seems that other later cloned versions may differ in their specs somewhat unpredictably (perhaps meaning forgetting the 3 degrees). Since tuning Beetles seems popular, there is the added advantage of being able to get distributor caps in lots of gary translucent colours too

Ian, I brought up the subject of the Bosch 009 distributor conversion because I had heard that it is a popular and resonably easily adapted alternative when it is hard to find an original Lucas distributor (or as in my case components to make repairs).
Consulting a friend recently (with the experience of several successful Triple-M rebuilds to his credit ) he also asked " Why the Bosch 009 in particular ? " for he knew of other distributors, such as a Lucas type used on a Mini, which had been adapted satisfactorily.

I think quite a few of the Austin 7 racers use this conversion. Perhaps someone like Keith Rawson at Oswestry could shed some light? He does run the Austin 7 engines up on a dyno. Bob |

I thought that Austin 7 distributor direction of rotation was counter-clockwise viewed from top whereas Triple-M is clockwise. Can't see how the auto advance would work. But maybe I'm wrong. |

There are a few 009s for sale on ebay at the moment. I noted a Bosch distributor for sale last week which was from a Ford cross flow and it looked very similar to a 009 - does anyone know if one of these can be fitted ?

It seems everyone agrees that the 009 Bosch distributor can work well in a Triple-M engine.
The reason I asked the question was that I assumed it would be impossible to find parts to fully recondition my original DS4 distributor.
One of the options I have also started to look at is the Lucas DK4 which I gather was used as standard on later cars. If these were once fitted to Triple-M cars 'off the shelf' is it still possible to buy the correct balance weights and springs to assemble a Lucas DK4 distributor roughly appropriate for an M-type ?
I found one website showing 009 Bosch distributors being reconditioned (and it does not look that complicated). Does anyone know of a specialist who reconditions older Lucas distributors ?

I am taking my PA (fitted with a 009) to Sigma Engineering in Gillingham on Wednesday and will try and glean some info on the advance question.

I am getting good results from a PAL Magnatron distributor on my M type. This was fitted to the old rear engined Skodas. It goes the right way round and requires no alteration. A new cap and condenser cost me ú16. Mine was free apart from the above so I have no idea if new units are available or how much they cost. It seems the post 1984 model is easier to get parts for- mine came from a high street car shop.

I have just fitted the modified v.w distributor from sports and vintage,it has improved my M type 100%.great service from mike as well.

If you are having problems with machining your original 009, or you have to purchase a new one then if you send it to me I will machine it for you. Email richardhardy@york100.wanadoo.co.uk
Alternatively, I think that Barry Foster may sell these modified.

I was told by another very reliable source that you cannot use the drive dog supplied with the Bosch unit and that you must use the dog from your old Lucas unit instead.
So now I am confused.
Can two experts with differing opinions both be right?

I read with interest the BOSCH dizzy mods and wonder if this is the the thin edge of the wedge. What ever happened to keeping our cars original? there are now T types with 5 speed gearboxes, VW steering boxes etc where do we stop?
Should I scrap my NA engine and install a VW engine so it will run better with a BOSCH dizzy?
There was a time when FORD engines and hydraulic brakes were frowned upon by the MMM committee members.
Could our respected chairman Peter Green and others of my era please comment on these mods before it gets out of hand and before I scrap my 6 cylinder engine?
