I would love to know the whereabouts of the nearest MG dealer to Lancaster Lancashire who may have sold MMM's in the 1930's.

My own PA1169 was sold in April of 1935 by Messrs. White Bros., Cambridge Street Garage, Accrington, Lancs.

For me the history of these cars, who they were supplied by etc is as interesting as the car's themselves. I woundn't mind trying to put together a database of these dealers, maybe including pictures of the period against pictures of the locations in their current state.

Welcome to the Triple-M forum.
I am certain you will receive the info you seek from our many members.
I note from my L2 files that L2074 was delivered to Merigold Bros, Preston. Most of the L2s were delivered to University Motors in London and then were supplied by smaller sub agents.

Hi,
Crabtrees in Kendal were certainly main dealers immediately post war and I believe also in the thirties, if your moniker is a registration number it was certainly Westmorland
up to 1974.

Chris Couper of California has assembled a huge list of MG dealers in the UK as well as elsewhere in the world. You may find his list on the website "The Original MG TD". Although this list applies mainly to cars of the immediate post war period, many dealers were around in the thirties when the Triple-M cars were being sold. The link to his dealers page is:

The back pages of the original manual for the J3 (1932) has several pages of dealers and agents. I'm off base this week so can't copy. However there is surely someone with more ready access to their own manual able to help.

| Thanks for all this information its a great starting point. After looking at the link that Lew supplied I have heard about Loxhams in Lancaster. I don't suppose there is anyone on this forum whose car was supplied by Loxhams in particular? |

| Thanks for that Bruce - its nice to know that there is a car still surviving with a local connection to myself. You will probably already know this detail, but as far as I am aware Loxhams used to be positioned to the direct right of where KFC (Austin Dealer Barton Townley) is located on Penny Street. |

You likely know that Google Earth can locate and zoom in on relatively recent photos of a particular address. I had a particular interest in the dealership from which my 36 PB Airline was sold (Brigden and Company, 187 Western Road, Brighton)and did a Google Earth search, but it wasn't until I visited the area history library in Brighton that I hit the jackpot. I was able to get a huge amount of data including the biography of John Brigden (Brighton Mayor 4 times), fire department maps of the interior for years 1898 onward to 1953, period advertising, etc. Sometimes, the best source is the local historical repositories.
I would now like to do the same with White Bros, Cambridge Street Garage, Accrington, Lancs. However, I do not have the street address, so a Google Earth search can only let me do a virtual walkthrough of the neighborhood.

The Approved Dealer / Dealer and Wholesale / Retail demarcation was rigidly maintained in the UK until recent times. Thus PA 0603 was supplied by The White Hart Garage, High Wycombe, Bucks., who looked after the car for the first three owners. It was 'officially' supplied, as far as MG were concerned, through Hewens of Maidenhead, as shown by the factory record.
If any member knows of the then address of White Hart in High Wycombe, I would be grateful.

I think Loxhams were major Lancashire dealers. They certainly had a garage - perhaps their main garage - in Preston in the 1950s. My uncle had an Austin A40 pickup which I am sure he bought from there about 1951 for his wholesale fish business. In 1962 he bought an Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire which had originally been supplied by Merigolds Ltd of 147/8 Church Street,Preston - presumably the Merigold Bros who had supplied George Eagle's L2. I still have the Sapphire's buff logbook.

Thanks for all these replies and information, I will start to put together a rudimentary spreadsheet (plans for something more detailed in the future) to collate this information. More information is always welcome. I appreciate that my initial efforts might not be very technical but I will try my best.
