My early J instruction book lists for Lancashire;
Hebdens in Burnley, Merigolds in Preston and H.H. Timberlake in Wigan, though I guess Simpsons of Barrow are a possibility too.
You may get nearer by comparing registration letters of known register cars. Timberlake issued WM7500 to D0430 in April 1932.

Thanks for that John, I will have to look into these books and other resources in more detail to build up the spreadsheet.

I have a slightly broad question to ask any member as at the moment I lack the knowledge - Would it be possible to give me the first and last known chassis numbers for each MMM model? (I have assumed that the numbers between are consecutive)

Thanks for all your help

Matthew. My PA was originally supplied , in January 1935 , by Joseph Cockshoot & Co Ltd of Manchester. They were wellknown agents for MG , both before & after the war. It carries a Manchester registration number , viz. BNA
To trace cars registered in any area a good start would be to look at all the cars listed with local registration numbers as shown in the back of the Triple-M Register. Note ; unfortunately not all known Triple-M cars are shown as those who are not members or for some other reason are ommitted. Personally , I would like to see all known cars listed with a suitable comment alongside saying e.g. '' not a register member but known to exist '' etc. Hope this helps. Ray.

Evening All,

I must first apologise for the poor quality image, it is my first attempt at uploading & it is a screenshot of a small section of the spreadsheet I am creating.

I know that there will be information missing but so far I have identified 148 Main and sub Dealership in the 1930's (please let me know if any of the info you see is incorrect.)

The Lookup function should allow the user to simply enter the Chassis no of an MMM and it will return all the info the database holds (in time to inc. pictures & assoc. documents)

For the lookup function to work I will need as many members as possible to contact me with the chassis no of their car, together with the name and address of the supplying dealership (to check I have the information on the database.)

Database improvements suggestions always welcome (I hope the attachment has worked .

Thanks

Matthew

Sorry, Matthew, but the image is much too grainy to view.

Who's Who in the Motor & Commercial Vehicle Industries is a good source of information. I have a 1964 edition, and it says first published 1952.
However I think there was something similar prewar.

Thanks Mike, I'll look into that. I currently have 154 Dealerships on the database and growing.

The White Hart Garage, High Wycombe, intrigues me. It no longer exists but I will enquire via our local historical groups.

http://mgva0864s.blogspot.co.uk/2010/03/i-have-no-log-book-purchased-by-my.html has a photo of Knott Brothers with an anecdote. It says Olympia on the sign but is recorded as Bournemouth. Thats Dorset.

Thanks for that David, an interesting read. I will add the picture to a Knott Brothers folder accompanying the spreadsheet.

Thanks

Matthew,

My PA (Ch number PA 1185) was completed on the 18th June 1934 and the Works Chassis Card shows that the first owner, R S Rowe of Finchley, North London took possession of the car on the 4th July 1934. The card shows that it was delivered from the factory on that date, and that the dealer from whom the car was actually purchased was Cook Palmer of London. The card also shows that University Motors were the main agent.

Hope that this of interest.

Thanks for the information on your car Colin, I will add it to the spreadsheet - interesting yet another sub dealership that hadn't cropped up in my research, you don't happen to have an address for Cook Palmer?

Thanks

No, sorry Matthew, I don't. The Card simply says "Cook, Palmer, London." As the first owner hailed from Finchley, London, N2, I would guess that Cook, Palmer were in the same area.
