Can anyone suggest please a source for the little screw, described in the manuals as a "reflector securing screw"?
Thanks in advance,
Dave |

Thanks for that Fred but no. What I'm after is the tiny little screw which goes through the reflector rim into the shell at about 10 o'clock to locate the reflector.
Cheers and thanks again,

I reckon they are just 4ba screws ... or are they 3ba? not sure without measuring but all mine come from my BA tin and fit fine and tight so they are nothing special.

Many thanks to both of you and, as I have both 3s and 4s, your suggestion is easiest to try Chris,. I'll look at that.
Cheers,

Dave, I think that they might be smaller than 3 or 4BA - could be 7BA which would make them fairly special. These are the same as the tiny screws which secure the chrome covers to the PA door locks. Those f mine in the headlamps seem to be conventional round headed screws 1/2" long and appear to be chrome plated. I will check with my BA taps and dies tomorrow. You might also try Namricks in Portland Road, Hove (The Nut and Bolt Shop) who have masses of all types of nuts and bolts (the clue is in the name !)
Best wishes,
Colin. |

I'll second Keith Ardley. He's not far from me and is a treasure trove of lamps, old and new and all the associated spares. Best to phone in the evening, once he gets down in his workshop, he tends to become a little 'incommunicado'..

Hi all. I've just spoken to Keith Ardley who tells me they are 5BA raised countersunk and about 1/8 inch long. He also said the thread in the shell is often stripped and his solution is to re-tap 4BA, but he wouldn't go any bigger than that.
Many thanks Carl and Hugh for his details and I hope the info may be useful to someone else.
Cheers,
Dave |

perhaps that was it, that many of the lamps I have restored often had no screw and where stripped of thread ... so doing a 4ba seamt ok

The definitive answer to this one, for anyone who may want to know!
Colin Butchers not only discovered that they are 6BA ,but was also kind enough to send me a pair and yes, they do fit. This is a distinct advantage as of course the odd numbered BA threads are much more difficult to find. Namrick in Portslade/Hove can supply these.
Cheers, and many thanks Colin,

You're welcome Dave. I have been trying to sort out a nice matched pair of reflectors for the PA - and failed to find them in my "headlamp box". So I have placed an order for two new ones from Archie Mckenzie of Pre War Austin Spares and hope that they will arrive before the dark evenings return ! It will be interesting to see whether they will be drilled for the retaining screw (which actually seems to be the only secure means of providing an earth contact with the headlamp bowl) and if so whether they will be 5, 6 or 7 BA !

Colin, My understanding is that a good headlamp earth is provided by the earthing tag to the circumferential clip round the headlamp bulb holder - which is used to secure the axial focus position of the bulb/holder to the 'sleeve' in the reflector. See below: (a twin filament bulb-holder shown)

I don't think the reflectors will be tapped at all Colin. I think it's only the shell. I find my shells each have one hole still 6BA while the other one is stripped. I think Bruce is right about the earth but of course the screw does ensure that the orientation of the bulb remains constant which is essential for dipping purposes.

Yes, Bruce is of course correct that the clamp provides a good earth between the bulb holder and the reflector, but without the little screws in question, the earth between the reflectors and the bowl is only by means of the "D" shaped tags which locate the reflector in position. To make matters worse, there should be a circular cork seal between the reflector and the glass (and rim). To make matters more complicated, several of my reflectors don't have these "D" shaped tags at all. So it is all down to the 6BA screws. To assist the earthing, I will ensure that my new reflectors are drilled to take two screws on opposite sides of the bowl.
