Reading the piece about Archway Engineering in the General section of the Forum I add my reply here as well in a vain hope to trace MG 3880.

MG P type (chassis P1815, engine 2071AP, starter 56989, gearbox 585, Dynamo B41243, rear axle 1526) was delivered to Mr M J Emberson, Mayfair, in March 1935 later to be sold to RAF Pilot Officer Douglas Shepley who loaned the car to a fellow pilot who crashed into an unlit tramcar late at night. My grandfather brought the wreck in 1940 and my father rebuilt her on a new chassis with new wing, radiator etc. Father was posted aboard being a pilot in the Fleet Air Arm, I was born just after the War and spent many a happy hour in a carry cot tucked behind the seats. The P type was sold as the family grew, the next and last we know of her is via the register in early 70s owned by a Mr Cooper of Ongar.

Unfortunately both RAF pilots were killed, Douglas in his Spitfire on 11th August 1940 off the Isle of Wight. The Shepley family lost three children in the early months of the war and through their fund raising sponsored Spitfire W3649, in 1979 a new pub in Totley, Yorkshire near to the family home was named the ‘Shepley Spitfire’.

I would dearly love to find MG 3880 or locate parts that may have been used as transplants, if anybody has any leads I would be pleased to hear, I can be contacted direct at r.verrill@icloud.com.

Hi Richard.

Thanks for posting the wonderful period photos. I can't help with your search but I notice that by the time it was listed with the Register it had been fitted with cycle wings.

Good luck with your search.

It would seem, as you would know, that much hasn't changed in modern Bamburgh!

It pops up on the DVLA website. There is a link on the site on obtaining details of current owner. Happy hunting!

Hi Richard

Thanks for posting the very nostalgic pictures.

PA1815 has the early Register number 452, there seems to have been no news of the car since 1973 when as you have noted the owner was listed as D Cooper.

The other car Registration AJO300 does not appear in the printed Register so may not have survived.

If you check the National Tyres and Autocare site, it returns the following if you put in the Reg:

Your vehicle (registration MG3880) has been identified as a 1935 UNKNOWN PETROL SPORTS (UNKNOWN).

Doing a Vehicle check on DVLA it certainly looks as if AJ 0300 no longer exists,
but against MG 3880 it gives the following info...
Vehicle details

Vehicle make
MG
Date of first registration
23 March 1935
Cylinder capacity (cc)
847cc
CO#8322;Emissions
Not available
Fuel type
PETROL
Vehicle status
Tax not due
Vehicle colour
GREEN
Vehicle type approval
Not available
Wheelplan
2 AXLE RIGID BODY

I would surmise from that DVLA info that it is still out there somewhere!

AJO 300 was PA1726.

AJO is an Oxford registration first issued in 1934.

Thank you all.
I have a copy of the factory records and there is a confusion but I think John is correct. Cathelijne there is an "Order for repairs" dated 1/2/35 for Morris Industries Export Ltd to paint number plates 5/- which has the chassis PA1726 & registration AJO 360 which is clearly an error as other correspondence ref the plate painting has the name of the owner Mr Place who appears on all the other paperwork. Also another photograph I have shows the deluxe items fitted in March 1935 apart from the headlamp guards and Fort Dunlop tyres.
I have a lead to Australia, only a chassis I am afraid but I have enquiries in hand.
I have an enquiry on its way to DVLA.

Thanks Matthew, I am in contact with Ray via a third party avoiding snail mail. It seems not much remains.

I must cut down on the size of my breakfast gin and tonic. I am beginning to get double vision again.

Colin,

Probably best to give up the gin and just stick to a light breakfast wine
