Thanks for this information everyone. I am currently on a fact finding mission in London (Car Mart & UM). I have Mansfield's on my database I will do some detailed research upon my return. With regards to Skurrays it is interesting to hear about the Police link. Earlier this week I contacted a person within Skurrays Vauxhall dealer in Swindon - in the hope that they are one and the same - I have yet to here anything back.

Thanks once again

Matthew

On re-reading my posting I noted a typo - it should have read the Chief Constable's son wrote the car off.

The dealership that sold my J2, Croall Bryson & Co of Melrose, are still in business (though they are now a Land Rover dealership).
I phoned them to see if they had any record of my car and after being kept on hold for a few minutes I was told:" Yes here it is. A green J2 sold to Mr T Scott on the 17th of Feb 1934."
It was only later that I realised that I should have asked if the guarantee was still valid.

Hi Andrew

Thanks for that information I will add your car to the spreadsheet, would it be possible to have your cars chassis no? As the spreadsheet uses the chassis no the search.

In hindsight you could have also asked them for some spare parts, after all workshop manuals and the car itself ask you to contact the suppling dealership for parts.

Thanks

Matthew

Something that cropped up in London my research that confused me slightly, The Great Northern Motor Co (London) Limited did they have any link to MG?

Thanks

Matthew

You mention Matthew asking the supplying garage for spare parts. In the late '60s I discovered that the MG dealers (sorry, can't remember their name) in Perth (the original one!) had parts lists for certainly the P & N Types & suggested that they were hardly likely to need them again & perhaps they might like to "lose" them. Their reply was that they couldn't possibly do so; some one might come in tomorrow asking for a steering wiggle woggle or a headlamp widget.

Happy days,

Dave

I'm not restoring an MMM but I can imagine the delight of someone who is, who happened upon the original supplying dealer and obtained that rarest of items a NOS item. I have identified a couple of dealerships in Perth that might jog your memory - Perth Garage Limited & Shield's Motor Co Limited.

Thanks

Matthew

I remember Mansfields had a garage in Lewes, East Sussex. I used to pass there every day on my way to school ( I used to walk a mile to school and back )and I always had a look at the cars in for servicing..if I only could afford a camera !

Brigdens of Brighton. Yes they used to service the vans for my father in laws bakery business in Brighton pre- war. They were mainly Austin 10 vans and needed a frequent ' de-coke ', that an expression one dose'nt hear often today ! And I can remember my father in law saying that the vans were hand painted by the garage. mmm !

Thanks for that Chris, I only have Mansfields in Brighton. You don't happen to know which street in Lewes? I will endeavour to obtain as much photographic & documentary evidence for each and every dealership.

Thanks

Matthew

I'm afraid Matthew that the names mean nothing to me & I can't even remember where in the town this one was located!

Cheers,

Dave

Chris,

If you know a dealership name and the town where it was located, local directories like Kelly's and, indeed, old phone books, can often pinpoint the address.. Some of these old records are online via genealogy resources like Ancestry.

I used to own Fo353 and it was supplied to Squire motors Remenham hill Hendon as a demonstration car I believe they were MG agents as well as building the Squire sports car. My F2 F1441 was sold by Bambers of Birkdale Lancs although Timberlakes of Wigan seem to have been the main agent. hope this some use to you in you research.
